Earlier today, Huawei launched a new phablet in India called the Ascend Mate. The 6.1-inch phablet enters a mid-range phablet segment where competition is fierce and Samsung is known to enjoy supremacy. So, will Huawei latest offering in India be able to make a mark in Samsung’s territory? We compare it against the recently launched Galaxy Mega 6.3 to find out.
The Ascend P6 has been placed just below the Galaxy Mega 6.3 in terms of price, with about Rs 6,000 differentiating the two. The displays on both the device are nearly the same with 6-inches+ display with 720p resolution.
In terms of power, the Ascend Mate edges ahead with a 1.5GHz quad-core Huawei K3V2 chipset and 2GB of RAM at its heart compared to the 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor and 1.5GB of RAM on the Galaxy Mega 6.3. Though both of them should be enough to ensure a smooth performance, extra power is always appreciated, so the Ascend Mate wins this round.
Both the devices feature 8-megapixel rear cameras and 1-megapixel and 1.9-megapixel secondary cameras respectively. It is difficult to comment on the quality of the photographs until we have reviewed both the devices, so we will reserve our judgments till that time.
In the memory department both the devices give the users an advantage of expandable memory using microSD cards, but Samsung edges ahead by offering expandable memory up to 64GB, while Huawei can only be expanded up to 32GB.
When their lasting power is compared then Ascend Mate is way ahead of the Galaxy Mega with a massive 4,050mAh battery with fast charge mode powering it, which Huawei claims has performance levels similar to a 5,000mAh battery. In comparison Samsung’s phablet is powered by a much smaller 3,200mAh battery.
Finally talking of the software, the Huawei phablet runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box which will sure be upgradable to 4.2 in the near future, but Samsung here takes the advantage by offering Android 4.2 out of the box.
Overall, it’s a tight battle between the two. Samsung has the brand equity and has a product that looks and works similar to its flagship – the Galaxy S4, while Huawei is offering a phablet that has a superior feature set and a much better price, which is always a consideration for the consumer. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.
